Mehndi night planning: the vendors you need, a running order and a realistic budget

The mehndi is often the night people remember: the colour, the dholki songs, the cousins' dance that went on too long. It is also an event with its own venue, menu and vendors, and it needs planning like one.

A mehndi night has its own list of vendors: a venue, catering, a mehndi artist for the bride and guests, a stage and decor, music from dhol players, a DJ or both, and a photographer. Book the artist six to eight months ahead. The bride's mehndi goes on one to two days before the wedding, so the colour is at its deepest on the day. One 2026 Bradford budget puts a full mehndi event at about £7,000.

What a mehndi night is for

The mehndi is a pre-wedding celebration held by many Muslim, Hindu and Sikh families, where henna is applied to the bride's hands and feet and to guests, with singing, dancing and food. It can be a family gathering at home or a hall event for 300. Where it sits in the wedding week, and what happens at it, varies by family and region, so ask your own family what they expect.

See mehndi, dholki and mayun in our glossary.

One mehndi or two?

Some families hold one mehndi for each side, each hosting its own. Others hold a joint mehndi. Two smaller events mean two venues and two menus, but each can fit a smaller, cheaper hall. One joint event needs a bigger room but only one set of vendors.

The bride's mehndi: timing and safety

When. Many artists apply the bride's mehndi one to two days before the wedding. One Manchester artist recommends exactly that, and another notes the stain "deepens over 24-48 hours." That's why many brides have their mehndi applied privately the day before the mehndi night, or on the afternoon of it, rather than during the party.

How long. A full bridal design on hands and feet is slow, careful work. Ask your artist how long yours will take and build it into the day.

Natural henna only. The British Skin Foundation warns that "black henna" temporary tattoos contain PPD, a hair dye chemical, and that "when PPD is used on the skin in this way it can cause blistering, painful skin burns and may even lead to scarring." Using PPD in products for the skin is illegal in the UK. Natural henna stains orange to reddish brown. Ask every artist what is in their paste, including for guests and children.

Guest mehndi: how many artists?

Work it out from the number of guests who want mehndi and the time you have. One London artist lists guest mehndi from £50 an hour, or £5 per design, at about 12 simple designs an hour. At that rate, 60 guests need about five artist-hours. If you want everyone done in two hours, book three artists.

Many artists do not publish prices and quote per event, so ask for a written quote with hours, number of artists and travel. Put the guest mehndi somewhere with good light and a table, away from the dance floor, and ask a cousin to keep the queue moving. Guests with fresh mehndi can't eat easily, so time it before or well after dinner.

A sample running order

Illustrative example. Adjust to your family and venue.

TimeWhat happens
5:00pmDecorator finishes. Caterer sets up.
6:30pmGuests arrive. Soft drinks and starters. Guest mehndi starts.
7:30pmThe bride's entrance, often with dhol and family carrying a canopy or tray of mehndi.
7:45pmRasm: family members place mehndi and sweets for the couple.
8:30pmDinner.
9:30pmPerformances: family dances, songs, dholki.
10:00pmDancing, with the DJ.
10:45pmLast song. Check your venue's finish time.
11:00pmVenue closes.

Finish times matter. Under gov.uk guidance, music at licensed and community premises needs no separate entertainment licence between 8am and 11pm for audiences of up to 500. After that, the venue's own licence and conditions decide. Check before you plan a late finish.

Your catering share works out at about £16.00 per guest across all events (750 guest places). That's outside what most UK guides quote. Check it against real quotes.

An estimate for one scenario. Nothing is saved. Shares come from published UK guides, most of them written by businesses that sell wedding services, so treat them as rough guides, not survey results.

A mehndi in a hall usually needs the same checks as the main day: capacity with a stage and dance floor, the kitchen, parking and the licence's finish time. Our guide to choosing a venue for 500 guests covers them, and most of it applies at 150 guests too.

If you're planning in Bradford, Blackburn, Bolton or Manchester, our city pages list local vendors as they join.

Where to save

  • A simpler menu. Street food, chaat or a single buffet instead of a three-course meal.
  • A smaller venue. Two small mehndis can cost less than one big one.
  • Guest mehndi for a set time. Two hours of guest mehndi, not the whole night.
  • Family decor. Cushions, fairy lights and marigolds from family can replace some decorator items. Agree who sets up and clears.
  • Book vendors across events. A photographer or decorator booked for the whole week may offer a better rate. Ask.

Before you pay a deposit

Get every quote in writing: the date, hours, what's included, the deposit, the balance and the date it's due, and what happens if either side cancels. Read our deposit and booking checklist and our guide to wedding deposits and cancellations.

On Nodus, you can browse vendors, message them and keep quotes and bookings in one place. When you book, you pay a deposit to confirm, then the balance before your event, each paid directly to your vendor through Stripe. No bank transfers to strangers.

Questions

Many artists recommend one to two days before the wedding. Natural henna starts orange and darkens over the next 24 to 48 hours, so applying it the night before can mean it hasn't reached its full colour on the day.

It depends on guests, venue and menu. One 2026 sample budget for a Pakistani wedding in Bradford put the whole mehndi event at about £7,000. The same guide lists Bradford mehndi catering from £14 to £45 per head. Get quotes for your own numbers.

Many artists don't publish prices. One London artist lists guest mehndi from £50 an hour, or £5 per design, with about 12 simple designs an hour. For a big mehndi, book two or more artists or limit guest mehndi to a set time.

No. So-called black henna often contains PPD, a hair dye chemical. The British Skin Foundation warns it can cause blistering, burns and scarring, and using it on skin is illegal in the UK. Natural henna stains orange to brown.

Some families hold one for each side, which keeps the numbers down and lets each family host its own way. Others hold one joint mehndi. There is no rule. Decide early, because it changes how many venues and caterers you need.
