Valima vs reception

On this page

A valima and a reception can look the same on the night: a big hall, a stage, a banquet and a lot of photographs. The difference is purpose. A valima, also spelled walima, is the feast that announces a Muslim marriage publicly. A reception is a wedding party any couple can hold.

Valima is written ولیمہ in Urdu.

The difference at a glance

Valima (walima)Reception
TraditionMuslimAny: Hindu, Sikh, civil, Christian and mixed weddings
PurposeTo announce the marriage publicly after the nikkahTo celebrate the marriage with guests
Usual hostThe groom's family, at Pakistani, Indian and Bangladeshi weddingsEither family, or the couple
TimingAfter the nikkah and rukhsati, often the next day or within the weekOften the same day as the ceremony, or the day after
Religious weightPart of Islamic practice: a marriage should be announced publiclyNo religious requirement

The BBC's guide to Muslim weddings explains that marriages should be declared publicly, and that this is "usually achieved by having a large feast, or walimah". That is why the valima comes after the nikkah, not before.

Which traditions use each

  • Muslim weddings: the walima is the valima. At Pakistani weddings it usually follows the baraat, which is hosted by the bride's family.
  • Hindu weddings: a reception, often in the evening after the ceremony or the next day.
  • Sikh weddings: a reception after the anand karaj, later the same day.
  • Mixed weddings: couples often hold one shared reception and a separate valima, or combine them.

Planning and budget

Both are usually the largest seated events of the wedding, so venue and catering take most of the cost. Because each family often invites its own guests, price them separately. Our Bradford cost guide shows a 300-guest walima or reception at about £9,350 for venue, food, photography and hair and makeup, using published prices. Try your own figures in the budget planner.

Vendors involved

Venue and caterer first, then a stage decorator, photographer and videographer, bridal hair and makeup, and entertainment, which could be a DJ, qawwali or live music. Browse by city from locations.

Common spellings

Valima, walima and walimah. Invitations often say "Valima Reception".

Questions

Yes. Many UK families print 'Valima Reception' or simply 'Reception' so that guests from every background understand. What makes it a valima is its purpose, after the nikkah, not the word on the card.

No. The valima is a Muslim custom. Hindu and Sikh weddings usually have a reception, often on the evening of the ceremony or a day later.

It depends on the family. They are often similar in size, because each side invites its own guests. Price both separately in your budget rather than assuming one is smaller.
